Chapter 1

WHY ARE YOU WORKING?

To many people this may seem a silly question - "to earn a living, stupid!"

However, look around you.

Some people are obviously fed up and not enjoying their work. Others just go through the motions, switching off as soon as they leave factory gate or office block. Others are obsessed and live in their work, often frustrated at not being able to make things happen.

And then there are a few - very few - who seem to really enjoy their work.
                               Why?

If you look further, those who are actually enjoying their work have something in common - and it's not money. They feel they are making a real contribution . It can be the volunteer community bus driver, or the guy who changes your car tires. Or it could be a local businessman, or a manager in a big corporate.

They have found something which escapes most of us - contentment and challenge. They find their work stimulating and enjoyable. They can see they are making a positive difference. They have the right work/life balance (the "IN" phrase of the moment).

Most of you will have experienced flashes of this - when your boss praises you for work well done, or when you've succeeded in making a sale. Or you've got home in time to see your kid in the school sports day.

But you're not there yet, not experiencing this all the time. In fact, if you don't do something about it, you will never get "there".

Work is important, not just for money, but for your self esteem - it is your identity. So if you are unhappy with it, you are unhappy with yourself.

Work Matters.

The key thing to be established is, do you work to live, or live to work?

I'll repeat that - do you work to live, or live to work?

Think about it for a while, because it matters in your career strategy.

If your life is centred outside your work, whether, golf, drag racing or travel with family, then your salary is simply there to fund your lifestyle. A lot of people can be quite happy with that. Others feel that something is missing but can't put their finger on it.

Examine your current job. Did you just happen into it, or did you actively seek it? What is it that you like and dislike about it, or is it something to do with your attitude, rather than the job?

Ask yourself, is your present attitude to your job:

      -  it's a job, it pays the bills
      -  well, it was available when I was looking
      -  it's not what I was lead to believe when I was interviewed
      -  there's too much office politics
      -  I make the best of things

Are you in command, or is it happening to you? Are you happy at work?

Let's expand on that last statement. You spend a large chunk of your time, in fact probably most of your waking time, and even more energy at work.

When you are unhappy, you get fed up. You get niggling ailments. You become unhealthy. If you are unhappy at work - most of your time - then that is going to reflect in your everyday health. Happy people live longer and are healthier.

A growing body of research is also concluding that you live longer if you are promoted - in other words, moving to more responsible positions. How this works is still a mystery, but it is believed to work through the immune system. Stress - a supposed "bad" thing - has an outlet through challenges and having influence.

You owe it to yourself to find the right job for you.

Or change your present job to make it work for you.

Throughout this ebook, we will use Joe Bloggs, who works in a manufacturing company, to illustrate the points, to help you in that exploration.

We will be exploring what you are really capable of - you might hit your ideal - doing something you love and getting paid for it.

A quote from Mark Twain encapsulates this:

"The most successful people are those who do all year long
what they would otherwise do in their summer vacation"
